The most common SEO misconceptions

I was asked to repost one of my previous post in English, so excuse me if you’ve already read this one.

If you have worked with SEO (search engine optimisation) you might have run into one or more of the misconceptions/misunderstandings that exist around SEO. Several of them can be quite critical to that person, organization or company that wants to be more visible in the  search engines and online in general. I found a blog post on Dave Naylor’s blog which lists a lot of these misconceptions – before you read it (and learn a lot) I would like to highlight a few of those I find most important and common.

Classical SEO misconceptions:

  • SEO is considered a one-off project without any plan or strategy to continuously optimizing the site – especially if the site has a quick flow of products/content or is focused on seasonal changes in content or messages. I.e. SEO-efforts are considered as limited in time, even though the market and the context of the site changes every minute.
  • An attempt to hit all markets simultaneously – what business or strategy in the world are trying to hit every market at the same time?
  • Failing to understand that a SEO campaign is a long term strategy and results don’t necessarily appear within the first few weeks or perhaps months in competitive markets
  • Focusing on a relatively small number of keywords with high volume, instead of focusing on converting long tail keywords. Why operate in the “red ocean” if you have the opportunity to go fishing in the “blue ocean” after bigger fish? (With larger fish, I think better converting customers … :-)

And the worst one in my eyes:

* Placing SEO outside the core business objectives and considering SEO something technical, geeky stuff that should run its own track unconnected to the business. This means that there is no managerial focus and commitment on SEO.

Read all misconceptions here – there are also a number of technical one which are really good (and very common): SEO 101 Common Mistakes
